Mrs. Hartman and I went to the Bell Socialization Shelter on East Market Street one night to drop off our donation of books. When I went we got all the books in and put them down. All the girls came and got books. Mrs. Centeno read a book to a little boy. I read a book to three little girls. One of the young toddler girls was throwing books at us to play with them. We started to put them in the bookshelf and then the bookshelf got full so we had to put the rest of the books on another bookshelf there. That was the visit to the Bell Socialization Shelter. The Lehman Center is a place that helps kids that need a break from their parents. The kids think the break is vacation from their mom and dad. It is a place where kids 6 and under can go. The Lehman Center gives kids three meals a day, a place to play with toys and books. The Lehman Center gives kids a chance to interact with more kids so it can be better for themselves.
The Lehman Center needs volunteers 14 and up. There are a lot of things for kids to do it must be fun. When they came to collect the books they told us all about what they do and where they are located on West Market Street in York, PA. That's what we learned about The Lehman Center. A Prowler Reporter from Central York High School came in to talk about Project Book Giving. She told us a little bit about the prowler paper. It's the High School paper. She interviewed some students. She talked about the different newspaper jobs. She told a little bit of her story and how she got to the newspaper. She watched our reading videos. She answered all of our questions too! When the paper with our article was printed, she brought in some of the copies of the Prowler Paper. That's what happened when the Prowler Reporter came in!
By: Dylan & Caitlynn At the PAWS meeting, we uncovered the LFL and some of our students spoke and told people about the Little Free Library. When we went to uncover the library, all of the people at the PAWS meeting drummed for us, including the Central York Middle School Jazz Band. Everybody cheered and was like "AWESOME!" when they saw it. It made us feel good. Then we opened the LFL and people started using it. All the books ran out pretty fast because people were forgetting to exchange a book when they take a book! Then we went on the announcements and reminded everybody to exchange books if they want to take a book. By: Owen and Cameron One day our class visited the middle school because we were making movies about why reading is important. We were going to meet with volunteer middle school students to help us film our videos and learn how to edit with iMovie. On our walk to the middle school we were very happy to film our iMovies. As soon as we got to the middle school we went straight into the HUB and had a talk about what and where we are allowed to go and the rules. As soon as we were done with the rules, we were all looking for which room we should go in. Our group found this tech room where teachers teach kids new stuff on technology. Then we went in to the halls and found some lockers that were not being used so we opened them and started filming our iMovie! Then we all went down back to North Hills. That was our visit to the middle school!!
By: Roy & Brooke After we emailed our Little Free Library parks survey out to all of the other Central York elementary schools, we had some classrooms who wanted to learn more about it. One of those classrooms was Mrs. Musone's third graders. They asked if we could Skype with them so that they could hear more about our project. We were happy to share! We talked about the LFL. We talked about how many books that we are going to put in the LFL. We skyped so they could learn more about our library. We told them all about our project and then answered questions. While we were talking, one student asked if we could put a comic book he had just created in our library to share it with the community and we said we would. His teacher sent it to us in the mail and it's waiting in our box of books to be shared out when we open the library. By: Manny & Mrs. Hartman Here is a video Mrs. Musone's class posted of our Skype session.
One day we got a box in the mail from the Little Free Library people. It was a surprise. We got pins, and a free book because we are doing a project about Little Free Library. The book is called The Little Free Library Book. It was autographed by Margret Aldrich, the author, and Todd Bol, the creator of the Little Free Library organization. We were excited to get the package! We felt really surprised.
By Alexis The news reporter came and interviewed some of the people in our class. The interview was about our Little Free Library. She was asking us “What’s your favorite part of the Little Free Library?” Also “what's your favorite book?” But there were other questions. We had to type the questions and answer we had to listen to everything.
I personally thought it was pretty fun listening and we got to skip class for a little. At the end she took a picture of us to put on the newspaper. We got to see our interviews in the newspaper! By Ellaina & Myla The last time Mr. Ressel visited our school he got to bring the full structure of the LFL unpainted. The LFL is a castle and it looks like a castle from medieval times. Then the doors in the front doors in the front of the LFL open and it looks like gates are opening. Next the bookmark holders are on the front two towers of the castle and the bookmark holders are going to get fire painted on them. Last Mr. Ressel said that this will take a little bit to paint. The art teacher, Mr. Grandi, visited too. He asked our opinions about painting. Then they are going to paint stones on the walls to make it look like stones.
I thought the library looked cool! When I first saw it, I thought you’d have to reach into the top of the castle to get the bookmarks, but now I see how the bookmark holders are sticking out of the towers. I liked how the towers have the bookmark holders and it will be painted. By: Elijah & Isaiah |
