"What I Learned..."

Self reflections written by the students who worked on Project Book Giving.

I learned that the saying is really true, “You can do anything when you read.” At first, I thought it just couldn’t be done. Now look. We have two LFL’s and a website. Throughout this project, I knew it was awesome from the start. Reading is my favorite subject. I’ve adopted the love of reading even more through the project. I learned that our community is really amazing. I love that we made it even better by putting a LFL in it. Throughout this project, I also learned about teamwork. We made videos about why reading is awesome. I learned that working with a bunch of people that are your best friends doesn’t always work out so well, still, I loved the thought of doing it, and actually doing it at the middle school. Doing this type of project is very difficult, but if you try to make some fun stuff out of it, it becomes fun. Creating a website, creating videos of why reading is awesome, creating book reviews, creating a LFL from a drawing, it may have been a challenge, but it was definitely fun. I learned that responsibility really is a lot of work. Being able to do this stuff is a lot and you have to be trusted to know how. This project is probably the best project I will remember. - Eden
For the past six months I learned that I’m a really good writer because I wrote so many stories and letters to people I don’t even know. The second thing I learned is that I’m really good at looking up things. The third reason is that I’m really good at reading. I hated reading but now I love it. The fourth reason is I learned that some kids out there don’t have food or books or a house. The fifth reason is reading can get you really good stuff in life like a job. Sixth reason is I learned that you should not pick people who are your friends on projects. You pick people you can work with. I learned what a Little Free Library is. I learned about some of my classmates. I learned about some of the people who help people to read right if they don’t have a house. I learned that in the future I will help people that don’t have books and the stuff we have. I learned in life not everything has the stuff I have. I learned if something happens you get a grown up. I learned that if there are two things, you pick the one you want, not the one someone else wants. That if my friends are in a group and I’m in charge, I’m going to tell the truth if they’re bad. I learned that giving people stuff feels good. - Tre
What I learned about myself when I was a reader was that the more books I read, the more imagination adventures there are and it keeps my brain healthy. What I learned about my community is that when me and my friends come closer together to be my best friends we made an awesome video that we were all proud of! What I learned about teamwork was that me and my friends were awesome at making a video, then soon enough, our awesome video was on YouTube! What I learned about being a leader is that it’s fun but hard sometimes. It brought me and my friends apart which made me and my friends upset, but after five minutes me and my friends got back together. - Jonathon
I learned that I can do anything by reading. Reading inspires people to do amazing things. I learned that writing is very helpful when you need things. You can persuade anybody with writing. I learned that our community is full of people without books and we are supposed to help them get books. Many people don’t know how to read and can’t afford to go to school. It will help me because I will know that I can do anything. I learned to encourage people to read. I learned that if you can’t solve a problem, then you can solve a problem with lots of help (class). When you make decisions you can really enjoy hearing everybody’s ideas. If you use teamwork you can get a lot of stuff done with a lot of help (team). You have responsibilities. When you are responsible, you get rewards and you feel proud of yourself. I learned that you have to be a good leader, you can’t just boss everybody around. You have to encourage them to do things. You don’t want to not let people be in the group or part of something that they want to do. They should be able to do what they want to do and not be bossed around. I learned that kids can do anything. You just follow your heart in anything you do. I loved the project. It was so encouraging. I loved doing and helping with everything. I liked that we got to make all the decisions. - Myla
I learned that the more you read, the more you learn and the more you write, the more you express yourself. You get better at different things like writing and reading. Me, I wrote and got better with ideas, imagination, and thinking. I will someday be an artist. It is my dream. If you write it makes you get better at being creative and with expression in your writing. Let me how you how I got started. I worked hard and practiced and I did terrible work so I lost my confidence in myself until I wanted to be good, so I put all my confidence in it and I did amazing. When you’re confident and sure, you will do great at writing!!! And someday you will be an artist or other and be a miracle worker. That is what you will get from putting effort into writing! I experienced the wonder of writing. - Donovan
I learned how to get people to read more books and how to keep track of stuff like books and the Little Free Library and many more. It taught me to keep things organized and keep things in ship shape. It taught me to read more books and like to see other people read. It is a really good experience and I just love reading now because the Project Book Giving and Little Free Libraries are the best things that I love. I hope that I can get other people to read when I am in fifth and many more grades. It will be a challenge but it will be a good experience to find out if people like to read or not. I will see how many books people can read and have a competition to see if people can do that and finish on my birthday if they do they get a prize. - Jasmyn
I learned as a reader to help with the project. Also what I learned about responsibility is I have to be responsible of typing and writing. The thing I learned about teamwork is to work together and help each other out and take turns writing and typing. What I learned about decision-making is that I have to decide to work together and to make a decision to participate in doing the project and help my teammates out. I learned that problem solving is good because you need to solve the problem when you are stuck on something. I learned that this type of project is to help people read and get smart and to get good grades. - Cameron
I learned reading can change your life just by one idea. I also learned reading can change everything, starting with your education. Reading is one of my favorite things to do when I’m bored. I also learned it’s important to be responsible. The next thing I learned was to be respectful to who you’re working with. I also learned that teamwork can get you a lot farther than just by yourself. I also learned about just go with your gut when it comes to decisions. The best thing I learned is about our community and the people and the places in it. The very last thing I learned is me as a writer and I like to write more than I did when I was in third grade. Now you know what I learned. - Braydon
I learned what reading is when I first started to read books I was like “Wow, I really love reading.” So after that I started to get a lot of books to read. Also when I started to read I started to get kind of bored so I was thinking I should donate some of my books to kids that don’t have a lot of books to read, so I got rid of my books and I got new books to read. Did you know that if you read a lot of books you can know almost everything? So you can know when your teacher asks you a question, you will know it already. - Alexis
I learned about myself as a reader by reading more chapter books at my age and reading more fluently than I usually do. I learned how to do more as a writer by writing more pages in my notebook and adding pictures along that made sense. About my community, I now know that my community is good and it is safe. I learned about my life is that I don’t want to get what I want. I always think I get what I get and I don’t get upset. This project will help my future by me looking back to this paper and thinking, “Wow! I am a really good person.” I learned that I can read better and understand all my books. From problem solving, I learned that don’t get up and tell the teacher that you found this pencil on the floor. So, problem solve. I learned for decision making is that you should accept other people’s work instead of saying “That is a bad idea!” It hurts people’s feelings. I learned about teamwork is that help out friends and don’t just sit there! I learned to take responsibility of your iPads and stuff. I learned about being a leader- to stick by your friend’s side. I learned that this project will help with my future! - Emma
I learned that when you’re a good reader, you’ll be a good speller and writer. Also, if you study or practice, practice makes good hard work. If you want to be a writer some day, you always do your homework, study, and practice. - Mehkil
What I learned when I was a reader was how to tell really cool stories in writing. What I learn about teamwork was like when my friend, Owen, came up with an idea, I said “Good idea!” and when I came up with an idea, he said, “That’s a good idea” too. I learned about in our community was how a lot of people help the community, like how they teach them English and help them learn. What I learned about being responsible is that people should be nice and help others with stuff. Also, to be nice to a lot of people. So that’s what I learned from that. What I learned about in life is to help people if they need it. Also that to be nice to my family and friends. What I learned about reading was you can get shorter books to chapter books because of how smart you get and better and greater you get. Also, I read about cool books, adventures, and more books. What I learned about decision-making is to make the right decisions. - Dylan
I have to say, I learned a lot with Project Book Giving. I learned that the Central community has a Rail Trail, a place to ride your bikes or walk. I also learned a good life lesson: If you think things won’t work, don’t give up! Maybe, if I’m getting a job (not any time soon though!) I could tell the people who are interviewing me that I put a LFL in parks and my school, they could hire me! Teamwork is one of the most important things in life (and this project). We had to work together on videos, ideas, surveys, committees, and much more. I learned by doing all of this that life is full of challenges. Accept them and don’t be afraid. I also learned that even if something doesn’t seem good enough, it will change the world. As you can see, these are some things that I learned with Project Book Giving. - Ava
I learned that me as a reader could go this far in reading. I learned as a writer about persuasive writing. I learned that this community really does care about our Little Free Library. Life can be challenging at moments. This project can help me for the future to persuade other people of doing a project just like we did. Decision-making may take awhile, but usually it makes a good discussion. Teamwork always works, especially if you work together. In this project, responsibility takes a big role. A leader can be hard work. This type of project is what I call mind-blowing amazingness. - Ellaina
I learned that I am an amazing reader and I learned that if I try my best I will get things done. I learned that when you see kids smile when they get a book, it makes you smile. I learned that if you always do your work and be responsible you will feel good about yourself. I learned that if you cooperate with your team you will get your work done and you will do great. I learned that if you problem solve on your own, you will get smarter. I learned that the things I did for this project will help me in the future because it taught me about teamwork. I learned that it’s good to help others in need and that doing this project is awesome! - Aiden
I learned that not everyone can afford books and what a LFL is and how it helps the community. Doing this type of project is what makes you a better person on the inside. I think me as a leader, personally, I think I do a great job. We had a lot of problems to face and I think the hardest was the design competition and how we had to design our LFL. Something I did that will help me in the future is that I got to get my third grade teacher to come and join us for the celebration because I didn’t want her to feel left out. What I learned about the community was that there was a lot of places that try to give kids who don’t have books to get some so they can improve their reading and writing skills. What I learned about myself as a reader is that reading can get you into a good college and a good paying job. What I learned to do as a reader is how LFL’s help the community get and share books like kids and baby books. Plus adults can use the LFL. It is a great way to help out other people too. Teamwork is the main thing when you are doing a project, especially like ours. LFL’s are everywhere like in parks, front yards, and when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere. These things can help entire families with their book shortage problem. And I am giving all the credit to my teacher, Mrs. Hartman. She’s the best fourth grade teacher ever. - Alayna
I learned that you needed to plan it first to get it ready to not get any mistakes in your final copy. I learned that you share out what you did to other people and share it different ways. I didn’t know what a LFL was until I searched it up. I learned to never give up and work hard. I problem solved if it’s bad I will tell the teacher and if it’s not, I will do it myself. I will not say no to anybody’s work that they thought about as a group to think. I will be more responsible to take care of my own stuff and don’t lose it. I learned that when you get stuff that you it’s not always that you imagine it to be like. I thought this project was fun and interesting to know and I really liked the idea of the Little Free Library. I need to practice to be a good reader and to become a good reader. It will not be always my things that I really want in my life. I need to get what I have in my life, whatever they give me. The project that we did will help me in the future because it will help others out. - Melanie
What I learned about myself as a reader is that if I have more books to choose from, I do better as a reader. What I learned about myself as a writer is that I like to have a lot of time to write so I don’t have to worry about rushing and trying to do my best at the same time. It just doesn’t work well for me as a writer. What I learned about my community is that I can just pick up one little piece of trash and the community is ten times greater than it was with that little piece of trash. That is what I learned about my community. What I learned about my life is that I love helping others read and do better by reading. How things will help me from doing this project is that it will help me do these types of things when I am an adult. It will help me be more positive and kind to others. What I learned to do as a reader is to push myself to be the best I can! What I learned about problem solving is that I can use my resources to help. I learned that decision-making is harder than it seems. I learned that teamwork is amazing. I learned that responsibility takes heart. What I learned was that my leading can get out of hand. I learned that this type of project takes time. - Haylie
I learned about a Little Free Library because the first time I heard about a LFL I didn’t know a thing about it. Now I do. Ever since January I was so happy about this project. I always wanted to help people in need so I wanted to go to the donation committee. - Imani
What I learned about myself as a reader is that if you keep on reading and reading you will get better at reading. I learned how to list all of my reasons if I write a persuasive writing piece. I learned that a lot of people in the community need books. The things I did for this project will help me get into a good college in the future. I learned about all the steps and in the middle of the book is the climax. I learned that you should always make decisions that won’t affect anyone. I learned that teamwork is always the key to success. I learned that if you did something you should always be responsible and take the blame for what you did. I learned about this project that you should always use teamwork and respect everybody’s ideas and listen to what they have to say. I learned that if you have a problem you could try to figure it out or ask the teacher for help if you need her. I learned about life that if you do these kinds of big projects you could help a lot of people around your community. - Owen
What I learned about myself as a reader is that I can read better than I used to. What I learned as a writer is that you need to put a little more effort to your writing and work harder. What I learned about my community is that there’s some people that don’t have lots of books so we decided to make a community LFL. I learned that life is not always easy. The things I did for the project will help me in the future because for the project we did things that relate with everything such as math, reading, and writing. What I learned to do as a reader is that you can master your reading skills by reading at least 20 minutes a day. What I learned about problem solving is that sometimes you don’t always have to tell the teacher about something because sometimes you can solve the problem by your own. What I learned about decision-making is always make a good choice for your actions or if you don’t, there might be consequences. What I learned about teamwork is that sometimes I don’t get partnered up with my friends or best friends but I still have to work hard. What I learned about responsibility is that I have to be respectful to friends and teachers. What I learned about myself as a leader is that I have to be serious at certain times. I learned that working together helps a lot. - Hilton
I learned a lot about responsibility over the past few months. I learned that you have to take care of different jobs you do throughout the project. I was on the book drive committee. I had to go to different classrooms to collect books in the morning. I also had to go around to different classrooms to talk about the book drive. I also went around to different classrooms to talk about the Little Free Library. I learned a lot about myself as a leader and about teamwork. We made reading videos and I had to work together with different people on a team and being a leader. I was on a team with my book drive team. I was also sort of a leader when I went around for classroom visits. I learned that I can write and read much better. I can write persuasive letters and opinion writing. I can read harder books and I also started to draw a little bit more. When we had our art competition, I drew a Little Free Library and I didn’t want to enter it because I thought it wouldn’t win. I am very proud of my class for coming up with this GREAT idea. Thank you, Mrs. Hartman, for letting us know about Book Giving Day. - Caitlynn
What I learned about myself as a reader is that anything can happen when you are reading. One thing I learned about my community is that some people don’t have a lot of money to buy books and I really wanted to try to help them. One thing I learned about life is that just because someone else didn’t do something nice for me, I can still do something nice for them. The thing we did for Project Book Giving will help me in the future by letting me know always try to help someone if they need help. What I learned how to do as a reader is always read a good book. One thing I learned about problem solving is that if someone does want to do the same as you just work it out and try to decide something that you both want to do. One thing that I learned about decision making is that sometimes it takes a long time to decide what to do or when to do it. What I learned about teamwork is to stick together and stay on the same topic. One thing I learned about responsibility is that you have to be very responsible with the things that you do with the project. What I learned about myself as a leader is that it is very hard work sometimes. What I learned about this project is that you can do fun things while still doing something for someone. I also learned that it is good to help someone. I hope that things we did for Project Book Giving helps out the community. - Kailey
I learned that helping people by giving free books from the Little Free Library and giving people free books is awesome! It feels awesome. I also learned that not a lot of people have books to read at home or not a lot of schools are that fortunate to have that many books. Also I learned to be a good writer. Like for example, I’m good at poetry. What I learned about my life is that I’m fortunate for having a good school and lot of other things. The things that I did for this project will help me in the future by knowing that when you help them they will appreciate you. What I learned about reading is I never knew about the Little Free Library thing until fourth grade. I learned about problem solving that you have to forgive somebody if you are in a fight. What I learned about making decisions is you always have to make the right decision. What I learned about teamwork is you always have to have good sportsmanship and you have to help. I learned you have to be responsible for your work. - Brooke
I learned that I am now an even better reader than before we started the Project Book Giving. I learned writing isn’t as boring or as hard as I thought it was. I learned York is not as small as it seems. I learned in life some things will be hard but anything is possible. This will help me in the future by stopping arguments. I learned as a reader to NEVER give up!! What I learned about problem solving is to stop it before it gets bad. For decision-making if you are in a group you and your group need to ALL agree on a choice. If you are just alone stick with your choice and don’t let yourself down! For teamwork, well, this was a hard one for my group. You need to stop arguing right when it starts (not literally, but you know what I mean!). I learned to always be responsible with your actions. I learned that a leader needs to be responsible, respectful, trustworthy, and kind. I learned to do what is right! - Zak
I learned that reading can turn into a huge and fantastic project. I learned as a writer now my favorite type of writing is persuasive writing pieces. I really didn’t realize how much our community loved reading. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. I learned that in the future that how to plan stuff out and all of the steps. As a reader, I learned how to love reading. Think about all of the consequences good and bad before making a decision. You need it. You need to take care of the stuff you get. You need to make decisions that are good for everyone in your group. It can spread the love of reading.
- Isaiah
I learned how to keep focus on things when the teacher is telling you important things about the LFL. I learned on our way of doing good and we may get distracted and mess up. I think I learned from all my mistakes. I learned that to help others and now I read to my little brother. - Dakoda
I learned how to get to John Rudy Park and where our LFL is at. I was surprised that I can’t believe we got a free LFL. It was cool to work on a LFL with my class. Life is hard work and it is always for a good reason. - Roy
I learned about Project Book Giving that reading is very important and that you can do anything with the love of reading. I also learned how to do stuff with technology. One example is iMovie. We walked to the Middle School to film short movies on all different kinds of topics. - Taylor
Something I learned was that I’m a better writer than I thought. I remember when I got to write a letter I wasn’t too happy. Suddenly, as soon as I moved my pencil on the paper, ideas flew through my head! Then I noticed the perfect letter that I had written. Another thing that I learned was that one teensy, weensy, tiny little thought could turn into a very very very HUGE plan if you just ask! I leaned this because around January, maybe February, our class decided to ask Mr. Youcheff (principal) if we could continue with our project. He told us we could. He had some very important questions for us. Mr. Youcheff met with us in our classroom and we gave him the answers he wanted! Later on in March, we had the High School art and industrial arts teachers come into our class to talk about a NH LFL and a John Rudy one. In May, it was in construction. Later on in May one was put in the school and one was put at John Rudy Park! Ideas can make BIG changes! - Ja'Nia
What I learned is writing is very important because when you practice writing you will know how to write better. I learned when you keep reading you will be a smart fifth grader. You keep practicing, you will start to love reading. Also when I read it gives me great ideas of what I want to be when I grow up. When I keep reading and writing it will make me smart for 5th grade. Writing is important because it will make you a better reader. This project helped me by getting smarter. When you read you will learn new things every day. Also you will make your dreams of what you want to do when you grow up. Working together will make the job easier. Working together will make more ideas of the project and it teaches you to get along with each other. - Tahiem
I learned… how to measure in meters. How to make dimensions. How people sketch. How we take a big idea and do it. How we get responses. How to get sponsored. How to hold a book drive. I learned that the books that I read, they always have a lesson to learn in the end. I learned how to write a lot of thank you notes. I learned that my community needs a lot of help with things. I learned that life isn’t perfect for some people. The things that I did in my project will help me become a better student. I learned how to become a better reader by reading a lot. I learned that problem solving can take awhile especially with friends. I learned that some decision makings are hard. I learned that teamwork can take a lot of voting and time. I learned that responsibility can be easy or hard. I learned that when I am a leader, I have to do a lot of work. I learned that doing this project is fun, exciting, easy, hard, boring (rare), and uses a lot of team work. Those are just a few things about what I learned during this project. - Madisyn
I learned that books are life, and books can help you when you’re alone. Some kids don’t have enough money for books and the Little Free Libraries at North Hills and John Rudy Park can give them books to read for free. I will like to see the kids take books from the Little Free Library and read them. I’m going to try to visit it this summer. - Kwame
I learned that when we all agree we get it done faster than just sitting there and not agreeing and slowing down. Our group was so fast and calm because we know how people can get when they go fast and so when I learned that I know that this was the number one thing I learned this year. - Hunter
I learned how to write thank you letters and blogs and how to persuade people and how you can just write one letter and it can change a lot. I learned about Little Free Libraries. I had no idea what a Little Free Library was until I started this project. I learned that books can help a lot. Just 300 books can help a lot of people. - Jade
When we were working on the LFL project I learned that good readers/writers come up with projects/ideas. It also taught me how to look online to research on different things. When I looked on the LFL’s we’d sit I saw all different LFL’s and I was surprised how many LFL’s were in the world. So the project taught me all about LFL’s. When we did the projects, I thought that we would never pull it off, but that taught me to never doubt what could happen. Be positive and look on the bright side. I thought we would have to tell almost everybody in the school to leave a book and take a book constantly but the same thing—don’t doubt the possible. Always be positive and look on the bright side. I thought that when we decided to make the second LFL that when we started we would not finish. That taught me to think on the bright side and don’t doubt the positive. That’s what I learned on Project Book Giving. - Brittany
What I learned is everyone LOVES reading in our community. What I learned about myself as a reader is I am getting more fluency reading. What I learned as a writer is that there are so many stories waiting to be written. What I learned about life there are so many ways to make our country a better place. How will making a LFL help me later in life? Well it will show how much I care about our community. I learned if you read too fast you flip your book upside down. I learned in problem solving there is always a mystery to be figured out! What I learned about decision making is there will always be a decision to make in life. I learned teamwork does not mean to chat but to work with new people. What I learned about responsibility is always do you work then if there is time and teachers say, you can chat. I learned it is good that we started this project because people will always have a book to read. What I learned about myself as a leader is always be awesome and then you’re a true leader. - Abby
I learned to research online and I learned about a Little Free Library (LFL). I learned that some people don’t have as many books as we do. Some kids have 1 or 2 books to read every day so we created a Little Free Library. I learned that our community is awesome and keep our community clean. - Mya
